A Matter of Conscience

A Matter of Conscience

For the moment, our Heirloominary stories have paused.

For the moment, our Heirloominary stories have paused.

When we began this project, one of the things we loved most was its ability to bring people together, to celebrate the big meaning found in small things, to uncover shared threads of joy, nostalgia, connection, and even loss. It created a space to recognize how much we have in common, and to bring out the best in our shared humanity. That foundation, however, feels increasingly fragile in the world we now live in.

I’m not just a business owner. First and foremost, I am a mother. I am a neighbor. I am an American. I am human. And while our stories are paused, I can’t remain silent at a time when people are being killed, when families are grieving, and when fear is shaping daily life for so many.

I have to believe that no matter what side of the political line we fall on, there are things we still hold in common. That loss of life should never be dismissed. That dignity isn’t conditional. That fear should never be what leads us.

Heirloominary has always been about preserving what makes us human...the names, stories, relationships, and meaning. It’s about slowing down long enough to really see people and to honor what they bring into our lives and the lives of others. In moments like this, that work doesn’t feel optional. It feels essential.

But preserving humanity doesn’t always look the same. Sometimes it’s loud and visible. Sometimes it’s quiet and personal. Other times, it’s making space for voices that need to be heard.

So we take a brief pause.

And when we return to telling stories, it will be with the same conviction that has always guided this work: that stories bring out the best in humanity by creating connection, dignity, and respect.

We'll be back soon. When the world feels cruel, preserving humanity becomes a matter of conscience. That's why we do this.

Melissa is the founder of Heirloominary, mother of two, and soon-to-be empty nester. Storytelling has been the common thread throughout her personal and professional life, and she’s thrilled to share a new way of seeing the meaning behind the objects we cherish.
